Best Practices / FAQ – Playlist Growth

How do Playlist Growth Campaigns Work?

  • Using an Instagram Reel, Rise will drive targeted and engaged audiences to your playlist on Spotify.
  • By starting out on Instagram, we’re able to hook users with a video that promotes the music and demonstrates the vibe of the playlist. This helps bring in pre-screened users who are more likely to listen and follow.
  • These campaigns work well both for promoting a specific artist-branded catalog playlist, or a broader mood/genre based playlists that contain your artist(s) music.
  • These campaigns start at $500/mo for a minimum of three months. We require a longer commitment for this campaign type to allow for a testing and optimization period.
  • Rise guarantees a certain amount of Playlist Visits per month, we’ll also report New Playlist Followers via weekly reporting emails and in the Rise Dashboard.

Playlist Curation

What should I name my Playlist?
  • Choose something people might search for (i.e. Roatrip, workout)
  • Avoid obscure or overly artistic titles
    • Combining mood/genre with an activity can be effective and may help when attaching visuals (i.e. Indie Roadtrip, EDM workout)
  • Lookup playlists your music (or similar artists’) has been featured on to get ideas.
  • Pick a title that fits with as many of your songs as possible
  • Be sure to include strong keywords in your playlist description as well to help with Spotify search ranking.
  • Choose playlist artwork that visually represents the vibe of the playlist, look at similar, successful playlists for ideas.
  • For Artist catalog playlists, you could use your artist name, i.e. “This is Bruno Mars”, or use a theme that fits your music, or both.
How should I curate/order the tracks on the playlist?
  • Start with the most popular songs you can find that fit the playlist mood/genre in the first 4 slots.
    • These songs will be used to drive traffic to your playlist, and hook them in, so we recommend keeping these same 4 songs at the top for the duration of the campaign.
  • The rest of the playlist should mix in less popular songs every 2-3 songs.
  • Following this formula, curate at least 30 songs, and continue for as long as you have material.
  • For artist catalog playlists, start with your own most popular songs and curate for the best flow/listening experience possible, staying intentional about how each song transitions into the next.
  • Add as many of your songs as you can without disrupting the experience.
What visual content works best for promoting my Playlist?
General FAQ

How does targeting work?

  • Our targeting is powered by large sets of audience data and proprietary strategy. Our campaigns operate by targeting the users who are most likely to engage with your content based on past behavior & engagement.
  • Playlist growth campaigns target a global audience, targeting audiences who have historically engaged with your type of playlist.
  • Additional targeting requests limit the volume of results we’re able to gain & guarantee, so we recommend sticking with our global targeting in order for us to keep with the given estimates.

Should I post the Reel from my own profile?

  • Yes, we generally see higher engagement on Reels posted from the artist’s profile.
  • If you aren’t able to, or don’t want to post it on your own profile, we can run the campaigns as a “dark ad” from one of our music discovery branded accounts.
  • If you aren’t able to make your own reels, we can create some to run as dark ads from our own account.

How do I give Rise permission to run ads?

Can I test multiple assets?

  • Yes, you can submit up to 4 assets and we’ll run ads across all of them, prioritizing spend on the best performing ad(s).
  • Submit links to alternate assets in the “Alternate Visual Asset” field.
  • If running ads from the artist’s account, submit Instagram Reel links. If running “dark ads” then submit Google Drive links.

How do I understand my Campaign results?

  • Rise guarantees a specific amount of Playlist Visits for a given spend on a campaign. We will also report the amount of Engagements on the Reel we’re using to drive traffic to the playlist, and new Playlist Followers.
  • You’ll receive weekly reporting via email that contains those key metrics, and you can monitor the results in real time from rise.la/dashboard.
  • Within Spotify for Artists, you can navigate to your Playlist and review streaming metrics in-depth from there.

How do I make the most of my Playlist Growth Campaign?

  • Whenever you have a new song out, add it in or near slot 5 to immediately start driving streaming traffic.

Are there additional benefits to growing a playlist through Rise?

  • Rise has seen many playlists gain organic traction through Spotify search results since the high-intent traffic from Instagram sends positive signals and often increases the SEO rank of keywords in the title and description of the playlist.
  • Playlists with over 1,000 followers and high engagement often qualify to be curators on playlist pitching websites such as Groover, Submithub, and Playlistpush, where they can get paid to review submissions.
  • Playlists that contain your music along with related artists can help to inform the Spotify Algorithm and create deeper connections so that your music is recommended more frequently alongside those related artists.
