As an artist, a label President, and a musician’s-rights activist, I can tell you that the current landscape independent music makers face is more than a daunting one—it all too often resembles something closer to a Mad Max world. Nefarious (and fake) promotional tools, designed to render nefarious (and fake) results from nefarious (and fake) listeners, all in an attempt to win a nefarious race towards “success,” which many measure by numbers that don’t mean anything in and of themselves.
That’s why we at ECR have a different set of goals. We’d rather have a thousand dedicated listeners and music lovers than a hundred thousand “likes,” or bot streams, or nonsense. We’re a single-malt record label, interested in winning audiences of single-malt music lovers. That’s what’s at the heart of our actual “success.” Similarly, we’re not interested in broader, less elegant, good-for-all-time-zones approaches. Does Macallan care how Budweiser advertises? I doubt it. Does Rolls Royce care how Hyundai markets their cheap cars? They don’t need to.
In the same way, we’ve found Rise to be like-minded. They too are single-malt in their approach. The results we get in partnering with them are reliable—and real. We know what will work for different artists who make different music for different reasons, and we can wield the tools Rise offers to help us execute the goals we’re after, artist by artist. Rise doesn’t promise streams, they promise that their tools, when properly used, can be of aid when they’re part of a larger, but specific, push. No magic, no one-size-fits-all, just reasonable tools one can count on which are excellent and effective. They’re not for everybody, nor are they trying to be I suspect, nor should they be (like Macallan or Rolls Royce). Especially in a world where too many are looking for fame instead of recognition, engagement instead of audience building, or making content instead of making art.
